Our 2016 So Far - August

Here are some highlights from August:

Lydia got to go to the Williamson County Fair with her friend Morgan. They ate too much and rode a ton of rides and came home super late. So basically, they had a blast.

The girls got the go to the Redmons' annual back-to-school movie marathon.  This year was Lord of the Rings.  To eat, they had peach rings, pretzel rings, onion rings, Orc-eos, second breakfast and Legolas Lemonade.  Ha ha!  Shelley is so creative with these types of things.
In the pic are Summer, Emma, Olivia, William, Lauren, Rebekah, Maddie, and Lydia.

Lydia crocheted her own pencil pouch.  This is EXACTLY the kind of thing I used to do.

Deep thoughts while playing my game.

Jack sent me this adorable photo of GG reading to William.  Look at how patiently he's sitting there listening.  Too cute.

I won a gold ribbon at work.  "Why?" you ask.  Well, I'll tell you.  I won't a contest of matching the duck to the duck call.

In a staff meeting.  Yup.

Now, why would Jayna, of all people, know which duck goes with which duck call?  Well, that's because we had a guest speaker at church who used and analogy of different types of ducks to different kinds of Christians and used a different duck call for each duck.  So, there you go.

I found a new hat pattern and made a new hat for Bekah.  And she loves it, so WIN!!

And here are my Facebook Funnies for the month of August.  LOL.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Quote of the day yesterday from Rebekah:
"I watched the Amazing Spider-Man 2.  It was depressing...I LOVED it!"
(She's too funny with loving sad things!)

Muzungu Problems

Lydia: I've been gone for two weeks and now I'm finally home and I finally have email and I can't reach any of my friends!"

Rebekah: Muzungu problems.

Not Your Typical Grandma

On Sunday, our community group is meeting, as it typically does on Sunday afternoons.  We generally have a food theme each time we meet.

This week the theme is Grandma's Cooking.  Everyone is supposed to bring a favorite dish that Grandma makes.  You know, the comfort foods: chicken and dumplings, cornbread, mash potatoes, yummy pies, etc.

I told David I was making cornbread muffins.  When he was concerned we weren't contributing enough, I suggested we also bring a pitcher of sweet tea.  "That's a good Grandma drink," I said.  "And people tend to forget drinks."

Bekah chimed in, "And we should bring some TAB."
David and I just laughed.

TAB may be her grandma's drink, but it's not a typical grandma drink.  But then, she doesn't have a typical grandma!!

Love you, Mom!  LOL!

Being Picked On, Old Photos, and Lydia's Impression of My Middle School Years

Last week, I was helping Lydia with her homework, when she suddenly began this conversation:

"Mom, when you were my age, did you ever get picked on?"

"I started getting picked on in 6th grade..."

"Why?"

"Because I was kind of a nerd."

"Mom!  Don't say that about yourself.  You are not a nerd!!"

"Yes, I was.  Have you seen my school pictures?"

"Oh, wait!  Was that when you had the perm...and glasses...and you looked like this?"
Niiiice, Lydia!  Niiiice!!

It wasn't really as bad as all that, right?
Okay...maybe it was.  =)

Checks and Bills

Lydia, getting the mail: "Nothing but checks..."

Um, those are bills, Lydia.  Nothing but bills.  Big difference.

Funny Conversation

The girls took a trip to the mall yesterday and did a little shopping.  Lydia purchased this tiara and scarf
and then proceeded to prance around the mall in her regalia.
Bekah purchased some fun jewelry: several pairs of earrings and some necklaces.
When they got in the car to come home, Bekah started opening her jewelry and put on a couple of necklaces.  Lydia looked at her and said, "Bekah, that's too much.  Don't you think that's a little over the top?"
Bekah just looked at her and said, "You walked around the mall in a TIARA and you're asking me if I'm over the top?"

Baby Boomers

While we were out yard-saling on Saturday, we came upon one yard sale after another with only baby stuff.

"It looks like this neighborhood had a baby boom!"  Rebekah announced.

"What's a baby boom?" Lydia asked.

"It's when a lot of people have babies at the same time," I explained.

"Yeah," Bekah said, "There was a baby boom right after World War II."
"That's right," I said.  "And what were those babies called?"

"Infants." Came the response from my little smarty-pants!

LOL!

I Couldn't Stop Myself From Laughing

As Spring Break week drew to a close, our supply of birthday cupcakes was dwindling.

The girls were getting ready for bed, the way that the girls get ready for bed.  You know, dawdling, needing extra drinks of water, and taking forever to brush their teeth.

I had just heard Lydia brushing her teeth, and had just called her to finish up her drink of water in the kitchen so she could get in bed.

She was hyped for some reason (like she needs a reason), and decided this was the perfect time to try to make me laugh by doing a little dance into my bedroom and through my bathroom.  I called her back into my room to give her a mini-lecture, when I smelled something sweet.

"Lydia," I said.  "Did you eat a cupcake?"

"No," she said.

But she had this look on her face - hmmmm - guilt.  Yup, that's what it was.

Then she added, "I put some lipgloss on my lips, and then I wiped it off."

She could tell I was skeptical.  I told her to step closer to me.  She smelled really sweet.  I was about to smell her breath, when she finally spilled the beans.

"Well, I don't know!  I got a little excited...and then...
I put some on my armpits!"

I didn't even make it a second before I completely lost it!!  Silly girl!!  She wants to be grown up like Bekah and wear deodorant!!  LOL!

Fortune Cookies

Tonight, after the visitation for Uncle Fred, David, the girls and I all went to eat at a Chinese restaurant.

We all enjoy seeing what message our fortune cookies will hold.  We got a good laugh out of mine:
If you are still hungry, have another fortune cookie.

As we finished off our ice cream, and read our fortune cookies, Bekah was a bit confused by hers.
Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide.

As David and I were opening our mouths to explain it to Rebekah, Lydia put it quite succinctly:

"It's like getting to choose which ice cream flavor you want to have.  It's a privilege, but it's a tough decision.  But you still get to decide, and it's not like someone is deciding your dessert for you and they're like 'Here are some sour balls.'"

LOL!  She has quite a way with words (and is quite astute in making her points!).

Maybe We're Going a Little Heavy on the Social Studies

I told Lydia to stop passing gas, and she told me

she couldn't
"because it's a natural resource."

Interesting People

Tuesday night, at dinner, Lydia was telling us all about everyone's "pocket person."

Two girls chose to do theirs on Bethany Hamilton, the girl who was attacked by a shark (Soul Surfer).
One girl did hers on Amelia Earhart.
Another did hers on Cleopatra.
And two girls did theirs on Taylor Swift.

And this is where our story begins:
Apparently, Sydney stole Elizabeth's idea and did her project on Taylor Swift.  But really, it was Elizabeth's idea first.  But Sydney did a good job on her Taylor Swift.

So I asked Lydia, "Is Elizabeth in your class?"
"Yes."
"Oh, well, you never really mentioned her, so I didn't know you had a girl named Elizabeth in your class."
And Lydia said, "Well, nothing really interesting ever happens with her."
Then she started counting the reasons why:
"She's always listening...
she doesn't talk much..."

I don't even know if she was going to finish that sentence or not because I was already dying laughing.

Yup, nothing interesting in the little girl who follows the rules.

Too funny.

WANTED: Jefferson Davis

Rebekah has been working on a WANTED poster for a Social Studies project.
The subject for her project was Jefferson Davis.  She had to create a WANTED poster for her assigned person that contained key facts about the person (photo, birth date, birth place, famous quote, accomplishments, etc.).
We learned some really interesting things.  Did you know that Jefferson Davis served as Secretary of War under President Pierce?  And did you know that Jefferson Davis married the daughter of President Zachary Taylor?

So Bekah's little project sparked some dinner conversation.

David: So who's your project on again?

Rebekah: Jefferson Davis.

Lydia: Who was Jefferson Davis?

Rebekah: He was the president of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Lydia: But was he really wanted?  Or are you just making a wanted poster?

Mommy: I'm sure he was wanted by the Union Army.

Lydia: Wait, which side was the Confederacy again?

Mommy: They were the South.

Lydia: So they were the bad guys?

David & I: Yes, I guess you could say they were the bad guys
Lydia: Wait! Was he the guy that blew up the Eiffel Tower on my birthday?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

(David and I could NOT contain our laughter...and we had to explain to a sheepish Lydia that she had the wrong guy, the wrong century, the wrong country, and the wrong tower!)
I think she's got it now.

**Key information for the story: Lydia's birthday is 9/11

A misspelling...or is it?

Rebekah and Lydia were working on their homework Sunday night, and as Rebekah and I were going over her grammar worksheet, Lydia looked up and said,

"Oh! Rebekah!  That's Mrs. Phillippi's pencil!"

It did look a little different that our other pencils, so Bekah and I just shrugged and kept working, but Lydia insisted, "That's Mrs. Phillippi's pencil!  I need to take it back to her."

So Rebekah and Lydia switched pencils.

"Hmmm..."  Lydia said.  "They misspelled Mrs. Phillippi's name!"

I busted OUT laughing!
You should have heard Rebekah, "It's where it was made, Lydia!"

Ha ha!  I'm glad Rebekah explained that one, because I was in tears I was laughing so hard!  Ha ha!

Wise Words

This morning, as I was pulling out of the driveway to go to work, Lydia was waving and yelled.

"Good bye!
I love you!
Don't get into any fights!"

Lydia's Math Homework

Instructions: Round to the nearest ten to estimate the sum.

325 + 87 =

Lydia's answer:
95

Mommy: "Ummm, Lydia?  How did you get this answer?  You're supposed to round so you can estimate the sum."

Lydia: "I did.  I took my wild guess."
(Snickers from Daddy while eating his dinner...)

Mommy: "No, Lydia.  Estimating does not mean taking a 'wild guess.'"

Lydia: "Oh."
