Hanging out with William

Our Spring Break involved more than just seeing Savannah.  We got to see little William (and the rest of the family) as well.

Since Savannah is an eight hour drive, we broke up the trip by staying the night in Atlanta on the way there and on the way back.
William changes so much every time we see him.
And now he's walking.  He was all over the place.  It was so fun to watch him.
He's such a happy baby!!
He just steals all of the attention.  It's like he's the only one in the room.  We just love getting to know his little personality.
We got to take him to a local park.  He wasn't so sure about the swing.  LOL

But the funniest new thing that William does is this little face where he scrunches his nose.  He had us cracking up all weekend!!

Tooling Around Savannah

So our Spring Break is drawing to a close.  I have so enjoyed this week.  We have done nothing but relax and explore.  We chose Savannah for our Spring Break because it was within driving distance and because it wasn't the typical Spring Break destination.  It wasn't terribly crowded, everything was so pretty, and the people were so friendly.
The whole St. Patrick's Day celebration was a definite bonus.  When we arrived on Sunday, they had turned the fountains in the city green.
Before the parade, we explored the town a little, and learned our way around so that we would be ready for things the next day for the parade.
We surprised the girls by taking them to see Mr. Peabody & Sherman.  The movie was super cute and we all really enjoyed it.

And there was lots and lots of swimming.  I'm very thankful that the hotel had a heated, indoor pool.  Only, we forgot Lydia's goggles, so she tried to make some herself out of plastic cups!  That girl!!

But the girls swam and swam and swam most of the nights we were in Savannah.
I remember how much I loved swimming in hotel pools.  It's always such a treat!  (And it helps the girls settle down and get a good night's sleep each night.)

The city itself is just really pretty.  Lots of gorgeous old trees with Spanish moss hanging off them.  Beautiful old homes.
The city of Savannah has a free transportation system that we used to get around town on Tuesday.  It was pretty dreary, so we thought we would opt for inside activities.

We headed to the Visitor's Center, where Lydia spotted a china doll she really wanted.  By the end of the week she was the proud owner of Savannah Pearl.  She had refrained from making any other souvenir purchases the entire week to make that happen.

We hopped on the bus, and then hopped off down by the pier.
It was there that we checked out The Pirate House. It was pretty fun.
The girls marked where we were from on the map. They had a lunch buffet as well, but we weren't really interested in that and went on our way...
We hopped on a ferry boat (also part of the free transportation system). The ferry would take you back and forth from an island and then back to Savannah again.
Once we were back downtown again, we had to hit the Savannah Candy Kitchen.
Lydia was dying for a caramel apple.  Bekah and I opted for chocolate.  I got a HUGE s'more and Bekah got a GIGANTIC peanut butter cup. They were heavenly!!  =)

Down by the river, the girls happened upon a man making "Savannah Roses" out of palm leaves.  They were so pretty.  The girls are super excited about saving them.  I hope they keep.
On our last day in Savannah, we toured one of the old cemeteries.  This was the second oldest cemetery and had closed for burials in 1885 or something like that. There were lots of neat stories scattered about.
Savannah really loves its history.
As we left the cemetery and explored more of the city on foot, the girls started holding hands while they were walking down the sidewalk.
I know that we won't see that much more, as they get older, but it made my heart just melt.  They're such good girls.

Much of the time on this Spring Break, I felt like we didn't really DO anything.  We were browsing stores, swimming in the hotel pool, or riding the bus and ferry.  There was NEVER a complaint from these girls.  We never heard "I'm bored," or "I don't want to be here."  They were amazing and I just had a to take a little moment to brag.  =)
On our last-day tour of Savannah, we also got to see St. John's Cathedral.  It's so pretty.  We got to take a little peek inside, but couldn't go in because they were having a service.

But it was really pretty - especially since the sun had finally come out.
So these are our experience of the city of Savannah in a nutshell.  And I feel like there's a lot more that we didn't see.  I really wouldn't mind coming back here for another vacation.  We'll have to see.

Tybee Island Beach

We heard a lot about how pretty Tybee Island was.  I was glad that we were getting to be close to the beach on our Spring Break - but glad that it was far away from the "party" beaches you so often see.

Plus, it was cold.  Ha ha!  Really cold.  We went to the beach in our fleeces, jeans, and tennis shoes.
Wednesday was smack in the middle of our Spring Break, and we knew that there were several things we wanted to do at Tybee, so we thought we'd take the day to go scope it out.
There were very few people there, but it was super pretty.  The girls walked along the beach and collected sea shells - and had a blast doing it.
I attempted to get a family selfie.  I attempted it FOUR TIMES!!
 I was NOT successful!  Ha!
The girls did find some interesting things in their search for pretty seashells.
We decided that we definitely wanted to come back again - but when it was a bit warmer.
We were getting hungry, and we'd heard about this crab shack place, so we gave it a shot. They had a neat little alligator pond in front of the restaurant.
The girls had a fun time checking all of that out. But they were being quite silly.  LOL.
My girls!  Where do they get this stuff?  Oh yeah.  Their father.  =)
We had a really hard time deciding what to order.  The restaurant was really more than lunch.  It was an experience.  There were a few seafood items Bekah wanted to try.  She had tried oysters the day before.  Now she wanted to try clams and crayfish (or crawdads, if your from the South).
So we opted for this HUGE plate (that was supposed to be enough for two people), that easily fed the four of us.
Lydia just wanted the crab and the shrimp.  She was a little unsure about everything else.  I was kind of with her...but I did try to the clams and the crayfish, which I had never tried before.
But Bekah was unstoppable.  She loved it!  She would pick up a crawdad and then say "He's so CUTE!" and then she would eat it.  She was hilarious!

Friday was our last day in Savannah, and it had warmed up considerably, so we decided to take another trek out to Tybee Island. It was definitely not warm enough to get in our swimsuits, but it wasn't so cold that we couldn't get our feet wet.

I was still freezing, but well, that's just me.  We were out there much longer this time.  We dug for creatures burrowing in the sand.
And we collected lots of pretty seashells again. This time, the girls found more whole shells.  Of course, you have to scroll something in the sand.  And if you're a 12-year-old girl, you write a Dr. Who reference in the sand.
David found these cool rocks to explore with the girls. I stayed back and took pictures, because, well, I know my limitations.  All I could do was envision my slipping and falling and soaking myself in the water.  Besides, I found some neat seashells while they were looking for crabs.
David found a cute little hermit crab and took a few pictures of it.
While they were exploring the rocks, Lydia left her bag of seashells on the beach next to her flip flops.  Her bag became quite the attraction for the local seagulls, who I'm sure thought there was food inside.  I gave Lydia a heads up that the birds were trying to make off with her bag.

The bird started dragging the bag away.  You should have seen Lydia running like a madwoman toward her bag of shells, waving her arms and yelling.  I wish we had a video or at least a photograph, but we were all laughing so hard, that just didn't happen.
But Lydia recovered her seashells, and we resumed our quiet walk on the beach.
I definitely want to come back here some time when it's warmer.  We've had such a good week.
